Born-Alive Bill Fails Prompting Increased Interest in Life Centers

One would hope that our leaders would want to protect newborn babies who survive an attempted abortion. It seems like common sense to protect the most innocent being in the world- a newborn baby. Everyone should want doctors to do everything in their worldly power to treat them and keep them alive. Sadly, this isn’t the case.

The Senate blocked a bill on Monday that would have threatened prison time for doctors who do not try to save babies born alive during failed abortions. At seven votes short from passing, the bill failed with a final vote of 53-44. This tragic news coming just after New York passed a bill that would allow an abortion of a baby up to nine months gestation.

The Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act would have required that “any health care practitioner present” at the time of a birth “exercise the same degree of professional skill, care, and diligence to preserve the life and health of the child as a reasonably diligent and conscientious health care practitioner would render to any other child born alive at the same gestational age.”

So many people are deeply saddened and angry, and rightfully so, but “the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God.” James 1:20

We must use our God-given urge to act, instead. Fortunately, many people do want to protect helpless infants, and God is using this evil as a force for good, particularly when it comes to pregnancy resource centers. “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28

Since abortion is in the spotlight in politics right now, many are being motivated to look to their own communities for opportunities to fight this battle. A light is being shone on Life Centers as many are learning about our ministry for the first time while seeking out active ways to defend life.

We have seen an increased interest in volunteering at our centers, and we’ve received more phone calls inquiring the best way to help. More and more people are being led to Life Centers to take a stand against the evil of abortion, and lives will be changed because of it. We pray that those who do want to act will do so as we all try to counter the culture and stand up for life together.

Life Centers’ Response To New York’s Reproductive Health Act

The news out of New York about the expansion of allowing abortion up to nine months gestation and contemplation of infanticide (killing born babies) by Virginia elected officials has saddened us at Life Centers. We have received many calls and inquiries. Many have asked, “What do we do?”

The expansion of killing of innocent life and the celebration of that killing should move you emotionally, but an emotional response is not enough. We are not to simply sit on the sidelines. We need to use the God-given urge to act. There are three areas of action to choose from: political, activism, and service.

Political
Roe v. Wade was implemented 46 years ago and has not been overturned. The law in New York was passed with a President in office that ran on a pro-life platform, and a conservative, pro-life majority in the U.S. Senate. While we must not abandon the political fray, history should inform us to not put all of our hope in a political solution to a heart problem.

Activism
Online engagement, marches, and rallies, while encouraging to those who agree with their positions, these things do not change hearts or minds. Christians need to be aware that for every six babies born in the U.S., one is aborted, but accurately describing the scope of the problem is not a solution in and of itself. What is worse, is that these efforts of activism often alienate those whose opinion is most important: abortion-minded young women.

Service
This is the path that Life Centers chooses. We serve women facing pregnancy-related decisions with love and compassion. At our centers, we provide free services like pregnancy tests, ultrasounds, maternity and baby supplies, agency and ministry referrals, and peer counseling. We do these things so that these young women can find hope and choose life for their babies. Abortion is an option chosen out of a sense of hopelessness, not out of a political ideal. Last year, we were fortunate to be a part of 1,533 babies being born to our clients.

What can you do?
Pray.
We need your prayers as our staff and volunteers carry heavy burdens.

Volunteer. Our budget would not be enough to run all seven of our centers without enough volunteers.

Give. We operate solely on the financial contributions of individuals, churches, and like minded organizations without government funds.

Sanctity of Human Life Campaign With Moody Radio

For the second year in a row, Life Centers partnered with Moody Radio for Sanctity of Human Life Month. We do this to bring awareness to this important issue and save more babies from abortion.

Moody Radio allows Life Centers to reach more people about the lifesaving work we do in our centers every day. With their generosity, we are able to celebrate life and proclaim its value with thousands of listeners all over the state of Indiana.

This year, nearly $30,000 was raised during our Sanctity of Human Life campaign with Moody Radio.

Life Centers was live on Moody Radio on Thursday, January 17. Executive Director Tom Shevlot spoke on air about the work Life Centers is doing in the Indianapolis community. Liz Canales, a former Life Centers’ client, shared her testimony and experience with Life Centers on air. Her story is incredibly powerful; you can find it here.

While we were live on air, we raised money for ultrasound exams. While free to our clients, ultrasound exams cost the ministry $100 each. Eight out of ten women who receive a free ultrasound exam from Life Centers choose life for their baby. Often times when a woman is undecided about keeping her baby, seeing the life growing inside her and hearing the heartbeat can confirm her choice to keep her baby.
